my travelling buddies
i have just returned from a great relaxing and fun trip in nicragua! for the most part, nicaragua is not much different that honduras for the landscape. it was a beautiful and green country, and definitely just as hot as it can be in honduras! first was a 15 hour (yes, 15 HOURS) bus ride to managua, where we just found a hostel near the bus station when we arrived. we walked around and found this tiny restaurant (more like someone’s house where they cooked for us) and ate some of the best chicken curry ever! with homemade mango salsa… it was delicious! the next day i split off from margaret and katie to go see marianne in matagalpa. matagalpa is a beautiful small town in coffee country. the first day we just hung out together catching up and then the next day we went up into the cloud forest, selva negra, to hike and spend one night at the hotel there. the hike was beatiful and more difficult than thought… the trail was very muddy and not marked the best (ie. ‘hard’ means the trail will be complete mud, steep, and have less signs) we got lost for about an hour, but due to our good navigating skills (and somewhat positive attitude) we found another trail by trekking it through the rough bush to find the trail. after moving on from marianne and the countryside, i met up again with margaret and katie in grenada. grenada is one of the oldest cities in central america and it was beautiful. situated beside lake nicaragua and beside some volcanoes, the views from there were great. we spent our first full day hanging out in a lagoon that fills an old volcano. we met some other travellers there and went out with them when we returned to grenada the next day. margaret and katie left the next day for san juan del sur and i went with some of the other travellers to hike the mombacho volcano. i then travelled back to managua alone to come back to san pedro on a 13 hour bus ride (at least it wasn’t as long as the way down!). it was a great trip with great people and in a great country. i’ve learnt of some neat places i will have to see when i go again :)
